After 55 Years, Kent Animal Shelter is a Howling Success!
Our Start - In 1968 land was purchased on the banks of the Peconic River and for the next 55 years thousands upon thousands of animals have passed through the doors of this humble shelter receiving food, shelter, medical care and everything else they needed on their way to forever homes. The original mission of the founders remains in place today to provide a haven for abused, abandoned, and homeless animals in crisis situations. Animals that in most cases would have met an early fate if not for the lifeline provided by Kent and their dedicated and compassionate family of friends and supporters. The mission is carried out today with the same perseverance and vision for the future as that of the original founders.
Our Efforts, Impact and Results! - Over 200,000 animals have been spayed or neutered at Kent’s low-cost clinic since 1974 having great impact upon overpopulation of animals and the resulting suffering that it causes. Kent’s rescue efforts have expanded to provide a vital lifeline to homeless animals across the country in crisis situations such as hoarding, high-kill shelters across the South, hurricanes and acts of nature leaving animals in peril. Since 1968, over 40,000 animals have been rescued, rehabilitated, provided with medical care including life changing surgeries, spayed, neutered, vaccinated and sent to their forever homes. Every journey begins with a single step.
We ask you to take each step with us as we meet the challenges of the future with the resolve and fortitude of the original founders. The time is now, only your generosity and support can help build the future of the Kent Animal Shelter.
The Future - The vision for the future for the past 25 years has been to build our "Next Generation" facility that better serves the needs of our homeless animals and expands upon Kent’s life-saving efforts and our mission.
The Need - Unfortunately, there have been no improvements to Kent’s facilities since inception. Kent’s infrastructure has deteriorated over the years with only quick fixes to maintain the 55 year old buildings. Sadly, Kent Animal Shelter is utilized to full capacity.
The Question - How will Kent provide an advanced, thriving, life-saving sanctuary into the future that serves so many homeless animals still in need of our help?
The Answer - With your help, by building Kent's "Next Generation" facility that will replace the aging, antiquated, deteriorating buildings that have been held together by band aids. Kent takes great pride in being the leading rescue and adoption center on the North Fork of Long Island.
To continue to provide the highest quality of services and programs as mandated by our founders and mission, a new facility will be constructed.
The GOAL
The Next Generation Facility Will Allow Us To:
-
Meet our future goals by increasing our adoption operations and ability to house approximately twice the number of homeless animals.
-
Meet animal needs by providing a new quarantine/medical treatment facility which will include animal exam rooms, an infirmary and dog and cat holding rooms.
-
Staff needs that will include a meeting room, lockers, shower, and luncheon area.
-
Visitor needs for additional parking, walkways, benches, and landscaping to create an enriching environment for both people and pets.
